Resiliency and Adversity

Today’s families, especially our children, are under tremendous stress with the potential to damage both physical health and psychological well-being. The stress comes from families who are always on the go, who are over-scheduled with extracurricular activities, and ever-present peer pressure. Later in the pre-teen and teen years, the anxiety and pressure are related to social media, “fitting in”, physical features, academic success, employment, and finally, roles/careers in life after High School, and/or getting into “the best” College or University. In today’s environment, children and teens need to develop strengths, acquire skills to cope, recover from negative influences and hardships, and be prepared for future challenges. They need to be resilient in order to succeed in life.
Brenda Lee Fisher-Thompson will share her research and findings over 35 years of working with children and families on overcoming adversity and how to support resiliency in our children and ourselves. Guiding Children's Behavior

Children misbehave and tantrum for a variety of reasons and once we understand what those reasons are, we are that much closer to finding a solution to deal with it. If caregivers and parents understand 'why' their children misbehave, they can be more successful at reducing behavior problems in the future.
Brenda Lee's Guiding Children's Behavior Workshop provides all participants with new research, ideas, strategies and tools for managing and guiding young children's behavior. She will focus on Temper Tantrums, Mistaken Behavior, Parenting/Caregiving Styles, and the Top Five Reasons "Why" young children misbehave and tantrum.

Electronics Vs. Nature

Brenda Lee has spent the past year researching the effects of “screen time” on children for her educational workshops and found many articles warning that using a tablet or smartphone to divert a child’s attention could be detrimental to “internal mechanisms of self-regulation”. Using a smartphone or iPad to pacify a toddler/preschooler can impede their ability to learn self-regulation. Researchers from Ch.I.L.D within the U of Calgary state that the “adverse effects of television and video on small children was well understood, society’s understanding of the impact of mobile devices on the pre-school brain has been outpaced by how many parents are using them as a “babysitter” and by how much children are already using them excessively”. The researchers also warned that this excessive use to divert a child’s attention could be detrimental to “their social-emotional development”.
She has also found that use of interactive screen time below age 4 could impair a child’s development of skills needed for math/science and the development of social skills needed for future success in school and life.
